Copeland developed it's coating and lapping procedures in the late 1980's for metal seated ball valves. At that point, coating and finishing processes were in their infancy and we had to build our own fixturing and machines to obtain the results we felt were needed. In addition, materials and procedures were also in a state of flux and we established our own laboratory for hardness testing and material analysis to make sure that we were on the right track. Fortunately, this hands-on approach worked and we were successful in developing some of the finest coatings and application techniques available today. Chrome carbide and tantalum chrome oxide coatings were two of our finest acheivements and you will find these in power plants and gold/nickel mining autoclaves in the USA, China, Australia and other sites world wide.
We hope that you enjoy the following videos and that they will provide a basic understanding of what the processes are.
Ball lapping used to be called an art because there was never just one way to do it. This video gives you a general idea what the process is and how a spherical object is finished.
Copeland Industries has applied HVOF (High Velocity Oxy Fuel) Coatings for a majority of the major ball valve manufacturers in the USA. There are other processes as well such as plasma. The basic principles are simple, however the small details in what makes a coating that will last are a little more involved. We have had the opportunity to coat and finish 1000's of balls and seats for a variety of companies. We have see the wear patterns of used balls and seats and discussed solutions with some of our industries best engineers.
Watch the following example of the coating process to get an idea how it is done. The process itself is interesting enough in that a miniature rocket engine is used to apply the coatings. For us, the small details of a good coating are what makes a Copeland Severe Service Ball Valve the best choice.
A ball valve's sealing surface is the heart of the valve. Other than leakage through the body or packing area, this is the place where integrity, precision and experience counts. Trust Copeland to provide just what you need. Our valves are price competitive but quality is never compromised. Most weeks we receive inquiries for repair of valves that have been in service 10 or 15 years. Many have been actuated millions of times. That's quality and that's what we are all about.
We encourage you to contact us with your questions and comments.
